BERKSHIRE CRICKET LEAGUE CHAMPIONS CHALLENGE MATCH

SULHAMSTEAD v BERKS LEAGUE SELECT XI

Sunday 8th June at Sulhamstead.

The annual Champions Challenge match held at Sulhamstead last Sunday saw the pick of the Berkshire League players take on Sulhamstead’s 1st XI, the League champions of 2013. A glorious afternoon drew a fair sized crowd to the picturesque ground by the A4 and they witnessed an enthralling encounter which ebbed and flowed all afternoon. The Select XI drew players from BCS/Grosvenor, Crowthorne, Mortimer West End, Peppard Stoke Row, Woodcote and Woodley. Sulhamstead won the toss and elected to bat, losing early wickets to opening bowlers, Nick Kingston and Tim Vines, but a late flurry of runs from Matt Hill and skipper, Matt Gill, enabled them to reach a good total at tea. The Select XI’s innings got off to a disastrous start with the experienced Ian Williams (3 for 11) removing two of the top three batsmen cheaply. The Select XI’s middle order dug-in, with young players, Alex Mackenzie and Joe Davies batting impressively, but they looked well out of it until Peppard Stoke Row pair Tim Vines and skipper Rich Ashton launched a rapid half-century partnership.  In the last over a huge six from Vines left the Select XI needing a six from the last ball to tie the match. Vines was unable to repeat the feat and so Sulhamstead became the first champion club to wrest the trophy from the Berkshire League representative side.

It was great to see the pick of the Berkshire League players in action and a high-quality match was served-up. Special thanks are due to Sulhamstead who provided a superb tea, and a good pitch. Thanks also to umpires, Martin House and Eddie Lunn who played their part with calm authority and they too enjoyed the occasion.
