| Welford Park Cricket Club is located 7 miles west of Newbury and 8 miles south of Wantage just off the B4000 Newbury to Lambourn road. The club overlooks the countryside of the Welford Park estate from whom the ground is rented. The club has been established for in excess of 100 years and research is currently being undertaken to find out more of its history. Within the past 10 years the club has undergone a massive fund raising drive. In the winter of 1999 a new modern pavilion was built to replace the old prefabricated wooden one which had served the club for the previous 32 years. An artificial surfaced practice facility has been built which now completes the clubs immediate building programs. The club currently runs 4 sides. The Saturday league team plays in Division 2 of the Berkshire Cricket League . The Sunday team plays friendly matches against other local Berkshire sides but also travels to clubs in Surrey, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Hampshire. A second Sunday XI was added in the summer of 2002 consisting of mainly colts with some senior players helping out to enable the colts to gain valuable match experience. Finally there is a mid-week side that plays now plays in Division 1 of the Wednesday night Downs League following promotion in 2002. Following the development of the clubs facilities two colts sections have now been opened up. Details about these coaching activities can be found in the colts section of the Welford Web site. As Welford is only a small hamlet, there is no major local source of players. Members of the club come from far and wide normally introduced by current members, but the main core do come from the West Berkshire area. The club is therefore always looking for new people to become involved. This not only includes players but scorers and umpires as well.
