League News Stoke Row v West Reading - June 4th 2011

Re Stoke Row v West Reading - June 4th 2011

Now that this decision has been notified by Berkshire Cricket Ltd, the matter is closed. This was the decision of the Berkshire Cricket Ltd based on a procedural technicalities rather than a lack of evidence against the parties concerned. The Berkshire League Committee ill make no further comment on this issue. Clubs should ensure that their members do not instigate or participate in further debate about it on the BCL website.

Sam Peates (Chairman)

Letter from Berkshire Cricket Ltd

Dear Sam

Since our meeting I have given some cosiderable thought to the contents of the statement which we agreed should be made by Berkshire Cricket Ltd relating to the long drawn out affair of the disciplinary problems which emerged from the match on 4 June between Stoke Row CC and West Reading CC. I therefore would advise you that it should be made known that Berkshire Cricket Ltd., having considered all aspects of the matter, made the decision to cancel the penalties imposed upon Mr.Oliver Nowell for the alleged offence, and his name expunged from the Berkshire League's Disciplinary Records, purely on the grounds of a technicality in the way the matter was dealt with by BCL.

In the realms of fairness to all parties Berkshire Cricket Ltd asks you to extend the decision to those members of West Reading CC, who were also, allegedly, involved in the incidents during the match and thus expunge their names from the BCL Disciplinary Records No other matters relating to the alleged offences were considered by Berkshire Cricket Ltd and having made the decision as referred above we consider the whole matter closed

Berkshire Cricket Ltd is becoming increasingly concerned at the nature and frequency of incidents of indiscipline in matches played and arising out of the BCL competitions and I would like to remind all your clubs and the players representing those clubs, that they have a duty to themselves and the game of cricket to ensure that it is played in the true spirit of cricket in future. If it transpires that this is not forthcoming, Berkshire Cricket will take, whatever it considers to be, all appropriate steps to ensure that any future offences brought before us, will be dealt with in a way that ensures that the true spirit of the game is upheld throughout Berkshire

Yours faithfully

C.J.Fright (Chairman)

League News The Spirit of Cricket

With the season ending this Saturday and a number of crucial matches taking place I want to remind everyone of the importance of matches being played in  the Spirit of Cricket. It has been a difficult season for the Committee  with a number of disciplinary issues to sort out. We do not want to be dealing with disciplinary cases after the season ends. Observing the spirit of the game can be interpreted in this instance as not questioning the decisions of umpires and not making inflammatory comments to embers of the opposing team. Please heed this message.

League News A personal open letter from the Chairman

Monday 20th June 2011

Dear all

I am saddened and hurt by the attitude and behaviour of some people who have been trying to stir up trouble on the website following a protracted BCL Committee Meeting on Tuesday. The meeting went on for over three hours and committee members had long journeys home afterwards. The meeting was long because we discussed two disciplinary issues at great length and the committee weighed the evidence before us very carefully before decisions were reached. I can tell you that as Chairman I did not need to give a casting vote because the decisions made were unanimous. I wish to make it very clear that no one from Stoke Row CC took part in the item related to their match against West Reading.

I regret very much that the decisions found their way on to the website on Wednesday morning before the clubs had received them. The committee member concerned, though he did not post the information on the BCL website, realises that he made a very serious error of judgement and has apologised. I am minded to accept his apology on this occasion.

However, what I find unacceptable is that one or two people hiding behind the anonymity of the website wish to call in question the integrity of the committee and myself. All committee members are there for entirely altruistic reasons, we do not get paid and I can assure you we are not in it for the entertainment value. We are on the committee because we wish and we think the clubs wish to play in a well-organised and well-run league, one in which teams win, lose or draw, wish to observe the ‘Spirit of Cricket.’
When most players go home after a match, committee members have to be available to receive results and match reports; they have to have the results on the website by Sunday morning or questions are asked on the website; they spend an inordinate amount of time trying to decipher badly written results sheets and going back to clubs asking for information which has been left off; they organise representative cricket; they make sure the league’s finances are in good order; they make the arrangements so that clubs can apply for grants and loans to enhance their facilities; they organise the Dinner and Presentation Evening. They do all these things and more, often sacrificing home life and social life in order for your clubs to play cricket in a well-organised league.

I can assure you that when we hold committee meetings we hope not to have any disciplinary items to deal with, but when we do have disciplinary items we are determined to deal with them with an even hand and we hope clubs or individuals found guilty of offences will acknowledge our objectivity and concentrate their efforts on ensuring that they put their house in order. We are equally determined to discipline clubs which fail to play the game in the right way. I am at a loss to understand what possible pleasure can be derived from picking over the bones of other people’s misdemeanours or misfortunes often taking the opportunity to try to rub salt into the wound. All this does is make it more difficult for us to run the league properly.

I am very aware that the contents of this letter do not refer to the vast majority of clubs or their members, but I am asking you as League Contacts to make your members aware of the letter and its content and to ask your members to exercise caution in the comments they place on the Forum. Otherwise, some members and their clubs may find themselves charged with infringing the ‘Spirit of Cricket’. The Forums should not be used to make derogatory comments about the Committee, its members, the Chairman or any club or individual. My address, phone number and email are in the Handbook so if anyone wishes to make any comment about he BCL Committee please have the courage to do so direct to me.

I hope there will be no further occurrences of unsavoury and inflammatory comments on the website, and even more importantly, I hope there will be no need for the committee to discuss any disciplinary issues for the remainder of the season.

Yours sincerely

Sam Peates

League Chairman

League News West Reading 2nd XI Home Ground

West Reading 2nds Home ground will be the Sulhampsteads 2nds ground for this year.

This is due to the fact that SERCC needed a premier criteria ground as they are upto Div 1 and as a favour WRCC decided to swap our 2nds ground with their 'home' which is Sulhampstead.

Apologies for inconvenience.  However it was all done for the betterment of cricket!
