Disciplinary Officence Levels and Guidelines on Penalties

 

LEVEL 1

  • Time wasting by either the fielding or batting side
  • Abuse of the cricket ground, equipment or fixtures and fittings
  • Showing dissent at an umpire’s decision by word or action
  • Using language that is obscene, offensive or insulting and/or making an obscene gesture
  • Excessive appealing

 

LEVEL 2

  • Showing serious dissent at an umpire’s decision by word or action
  • Inappropriate and deliberate physical contact between players in the course of play
  • Charging or advancing toward an umpire in an aggressive manner when appealing
  • Deliberate and malicious distraction or obstruction on the field of play, regardless as to whether such conduct is deemed to be fair under Law 42.5
  • Throwing the ball at or near a player, umpire or official in an inappropriate and dangerous manner
  • Using language or gesture that is obscene and of a serious or insulting nature to another umpire, team official or spectator
  • Changing the condition of the ball, other than as permitted by Law 42.3
  • The bowling of fast short-pitched balls that result in the bowler being disallowed from bowling further in that innings
  • Causing avoidable damage to the pitch contrary to Law  42.13 and/or Law 42.14 that results in a five run penalty being awarded

 

LEVEL 3

  • Intimidating an umpire
  • Threatening to assault another player, team official or spectator
  • Using language or gestures that seriously offend, insult, humiliate, intimidate, threaten or vilify another person on the basis of that person’s religion, sexual orientation, colour, descent or national or ethnic origin.
  • The deliberate bowling of any high-pitched ball contrary to Law 42.8

 

LEVEL 4.

  • Threatening an umpire
  • Physical assault of another player, umpire, official or spectator 
  • Any act of violence on the field of play d. Using language or gestures that seriously offend, insult, humiliate, intimidate, threaten, or vilify another person on the basis of that person’s religion, sexual orientation, colour, descent or national or ethnic origin.

 

All captain’s should note their responsibilities as detailed in the Laws of Cricket and in the Spirit of Cricket.  

 

PENALTIES

  • Level 1 – Suspension for 2 – 6 matches
  • Level 2 – Suspension for 2 – 8 matches
  • Level 3 – Suspension for 4 – 10 matches
  • Level 4 – Suspension for a minimum of 10 matches

 

The Disciplinary Panel will take the following into account when considering the length of suspension:

  • If the player has pleaded guilty
  • The player’s previous disciplinary record
  • If the player is also the captain
  • The conduct of the player subsequent to him being warned and told that he will be reported

 

FINES

In some cases fines may be levied against individuals and/or clubs. In those cases the tariffs are as follows:

  • Level 1 - £10, rising by £10 for each subsequent offence in the same season
  • Level 2 - £20, rising by £20 for each subsequent offence in the same season
  • Level 3 - £50.
  • Level 4 - £100

 

It should be noted that the Disciplinary Panel will also consider the role of the Captain, the Club, it’s officers or representatives in any situation requiring disciplinary action, reserving the right to award further penalties against the Captain, the Club, it’s officers or representatives.

 

All fines or penalties may be implemented from an effective date or they may be suspended for a defined period of time.

 

In any event, all penalty awards are subject to appeal at which point they may be reduced, sustained or increased by the Appeals Panel.
